The Vocal Music Program

At Stevens we have a vocal music program. The program is funded by the Stevens PTA, allowing each class to have 1/2 hour of basic vocal instruction each week. The entire school performs at the annual Holiday Breakfast and Tree Sale, as well as the Spring Vocal Music Concert.

All grade levels are included in our vocal music program. Later, as students reach 4th and 5th grade, they have the added opportunity of participating in our instrumental music program.

Room 204 also produces a spring musical each year. It is always related to something we studied during the year. In first grade, the muscial is presented in the classroom.

Elementary music instruction is the foundation for middle and high school music. And, Seattle Public Schools has one of the finest high school jazz band programs in the nation. At Stevens, the parents and staff  work to foster the well-rounded creativity of all students.

I believe all forms of music instruction lend support to the traditional academic subjects taught in classrooms throughout the grade levels. Furthermore, for those students who struggle in the class, music instruction gives them a different opportunity to find and develop their talent.

Mathematics is especially connected to music because students are taught how to identify notes and rhythms by learning their value. This lends real life application to whole numbers, fractions, skip counting, vocabulary development, and reading skills.
