Art Committee
The Art Committee, comprised of parents interested in helping with
art projects in the classrooms began
meeting in the fall of 2001. Committee
member include the Art Parents for each
classroom, current Chair, Susan Goubert,
and Stevens’ artist-in-residence, Darcy
Marlow. With funding provided by the
Stevens’ PTA, the Art Committee
facilitates art education and creation
by providing materials, supplies and
art-related books to teachers and Art
Parents.
Art Parents
Art Parents (usually 2 per class) directly support teachers with
art projects and take leadership roles
with classroom and school-wide art
projects. Art Parents play a key role
in the creation of student artwork that
is sold in our annual art auction. Past
Art Parent projects include: the mural
outside of the gym, the birdhouses and
mosaic stepping stones placed near the
19th Avenue East ramp entrance and the
outdoor classroom compass rose mosaics
installed just to the left of the main
entrance near the corner of 18th Avenue
East and East Galer Street.
Artist-in-Residence Program
Stevens is very fortunate to have local artist Darcy Marlow as our
lead artist-in-residence. Darcy has
worked in art education for 18 years.
She works with our teachers and students
in the classrooms on a wide range of art
projects. Darcy also coordinates the
artist-in-residence program through
which project specific artists are
brought into the school from the
community to work with Stevens’
students.

The artist-in-residence artists have assisted teachers in providing
insight into cultural studies for
different grade levels. Past
artist-in-residence projects have
included: Native-American basketry,
cedar doll making and story telling with
4th graders; African drumming, drawing
and story telling with 3rd graders;
creation of tapetes (“carpets” or
tapestries made from dyed sawdust, sand
and multi-colored seeds or flower
petals) with Mexican artist Isaac
Hernandez in the Spanish language
classes; and Japanese paper cutting and
book making in library classes and Karen
Britt’s kindergarten class with Japanese
artist Aki Sogabe
PTA Reflections Art Program
Each year the PTA sponsors student participation in the National
PTA Reflections Art Program. The
purpose of the Reflections Program is to
encourage creativity. Students are
provided with a pre-selected theme from
which they create literature,
photography, musical composition or
visual art projects. The completed
projects are displayed in the school and
reviewed by panelists who make
selections for future display at a
citywide showing where they can then be
chosen for participation in state and
national PTA displays. |
